PV's Yanek gears up for Nike national meet After an undefeated fall against Iowa competition, capped by a Class 4A state championship, Yanek will see how she stacks up against the nation's elite. The sophomore will compete in the Nike Cross Nationals on Saturday in Portland, Ore. In 10 years of the event, Yanek is the first male or female runner from PV to participate. She ran the 5,000 meter course in 17 minutes, 43.4 seconds. "When I was in eighth grade, a few of my friends from Cedar Falls told me about (Linn Mar's) Stephanie Jenks making it to a national 5K meet through Nike, and I couldn't even imagine what they would be like," Yanek said. "It seemed almost Olympic like. "This is still special, but it is not Olympic like, like I thought it would be when I was in eighth grade. Still, it is exciting to race against the best in country." Yanek has had a year to savor. She was second at the Drake Relays in April in the 3,000 meter run, fourth in May at the Iowa Class 4A state meet and dominated during nike mags the cross country season. She won the conference and state qualifying meets by more than 50 seconds and the state meet by almost 10. And she's a quarter inch shy of 5 feet tall. "It is odd being on the starting line and seeming so little," she said. "Other girls are so much taller or just all muscle. That is a little daunting." Yanek offsets that with a determined work ethic. Despite fighting a nagging hip injury last summer, she put in upwards of 45 miles per week. "She does all the little things, and lives the lifestyle of a runner nutrition, sleeping, hydration and stretching," Wheeler said. It has required plenty of self motivation in recent weeks since PV finished third at the state meet. "Most of my friends are my cross country teammates and they're all talking about how much fun it was to go home and watch TV and eat bags of chips after school," she said. "I was still running." The Nike meet, which features nearly 200 runners, has a unique setup. With temperatures forecasted to be in the 30s, the course is not designed specifically for speed. Bales of hay are placed around the course. And it is muddy. Typically, Yanek said fire trucks are brought in to put water on the course. This year, a drainage nike 4th of july system was installed to make sure it doesn't flood. "It is difficult to think of a goal place wise or time wise because I don't know how I compare to all these people from across the country," she nike 7090 said. "This course seems to have slower times."
