´╗┐Michigan's move to Nike includes 'Jumpman' apparel ANN ARBOR Since Michael Jordan first signed an endorsement contract with Nike in 1984, a five year, $2.5 million deal, the world's greatest basketball player became synonymous with the brand. Soon after, Jordan's own brand, "Jumpman," became synonymous with basketball. As part of U M's agreement in principle with Nike to become its official athletic footwear, apparel and equipment provider, the university's basketball programs will switch to Jordan Brand "Jumpman" apparel and footwear. While the financial terms of the Michigan to Nike deal won't be available until July 13, U M announced Monday that the deal will run through 2027 with an option to extend the deal to 2031. The move is likely to significantly alter Michigan basketball's uniform and branding. According to a Nike spokesperson, Michigan basketball will become the fifth program outfitted by Jordan Brand. The Jordan Brand currently outfits North Carolina, Georgetown, California and Marquette in men's basketball and North Carolina and Georgetown in women's basketball. First appearing on the third version of the "Air Jordan" basketball sneaker in 1987, the famed image of an extended Michael Jordan reaching out to dunk has grown into a commodity in and of itself. Jordan Brand generated $3.2 billion in retail sales in 2014, according to ESPN. The current stable of NBA players wearing "Jumpman" includes Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, Carmello Anthony, Russell Westbrook, Kawhi Leonard, Joe Johnson, Michael Kidd Gilchrist, Jabari nike 3m jacket Parker and many others. Former Michigan great Juwan Howard also wore the brand as a player.
