valley schools receive AVID grants Five Albany schools soon will be joining South Albany High and several Lebanon and Corvallis nike air max plus schools in offering the college preparation elective known as AVID. West Albany High School received a Nike School Innovation grant of nearly $22,000 and Lebanon High received one for $24,212. nike c webb Both will pay for summer institute training and travel, annual AVID membership dues and other training required to take full advantage of the program. West will be starting the program this fall for the first time, said Jason Hay, director of secondary curriculum, instruction and assessment for Greater Albany Public Schools. In addition, Albany's four middle school programs Memorial, Calapooia, North Albany and Timber Ridge received three year partnership grants from the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation to create their first AVID programs, Hay said. That grant is for $174,820, spread over three years and each of the four schools, and also covers travel, training and membership costs. The middle schools plan to use the coming school year to develop their programs and open them to students as of fall 2016. Hay said no new teachers will be hired through the grant program. AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, was created in San Diego more than 30 years ago. It's a private, nonprofit organization meant to provide students with the academic and social support to get to college, and is targeted particularly to the mid level students who may not have considered college as a possibility for their futures. Usually taught as an elective, AVID mixes study skills lessons with tutoring, guest speakers and college related field trips. South Albany began using it this year, and Lebanon and Corvallis are in their second year. Hay said Albany's middle schools plan to incorporate the study skill strategies schoolwide starting this fall, then evaluate which students would be a good fit to be invited to take the more concentrated elective class the next year. Plenty of organizations offer college preparation study programs, but AVID has a clear track record, Hay said. "AVID has really taken off, and not just in our state, in states all over the west, all over the country," he said. "Brent Belveal at South Albany nike 1972 had done quite a bit of research, and former assistant superintendent Frank Caropelo had talked about piloting it."
